Trauma and Orthopaedics

The role of occupational therapy in trauma and orthopaedics

Trauma and orthopaedic rehabilitation is the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Therapeutic intervention aims to restore independence and quality of life to individuals who have experienced significant injury to their bones, joints, muscles and other soft tissues, including rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery.

Trauma injuries are caused by an external force causing damage to the structure and anatomical alignment of the musculoskeletal system. This may occur because of a fall, a road traffic accident or from using work related machinery. These injuries can vary in severity from non-complex orthopaedic fractures to life changing events, affecting the individual’s mobility, functional independence and their ability to work and provide for their family.

Common trauma and orthopaedics conditions that benefit from occupational therapy

We have several specialist trauma and orthopaedic occupational therapists located across the United Kingdom who can provide assessment, rehabilitation, and support for clients with a wide range of complex conditions such as:

  • Limb fractures

  • Joint pain

  • Joint contractures

  • Back pain

  • Arthritis

  • Brachial Plexus Injury

  • Amputation

  • Loss of muscle tissue

  • Spinal Cord Injury

  • Disfigurement

Individuals who have experienced a trauma injury may need access to an experienced trauma and orthopaedic occupational therapist to enable them to return home from hospital. Our occupational therapists work in collaboration with other professionals to facilitate a safe home discharge, identifying realistic solutions to any barriers to independence, such as inaccessible access to their property and living spaces.

Ongoing support and rehabilitation will focus on increasing the client’s safety and independence in their home and community as well as addressing their long-term goals such as enabling them to return to leisure pursuits, work and driving.

Our occupational therapists use a client centred approach and are acutely aware of the effects that trauma injuries can have on an individual’s fatigue levels, pain symptoms, self-confidence and psychological wellbeing. We work holistically with the client, their family and carers to maximise their safety, independence and improve their quality of life.

Our specialist occupational therapists can respond immediately and provide rehabilitation to the client in their own home, community or work environment. We will provide a detailed assessment report and regular progress reports throughout our intervention.
